Broken Promises
White Buffalo Designs

This mask was created using half of a cannonball gourd. It measures 10" tall, including feathers, and 6" wide.

The face was painted using black, red, and white acrylic paints. The headdress is imitation Eagle feathers. The earrings are corn beads, also known as Job's tears.I inlayed three tear drop shaped turquoise cabachons for the tears.I used black deerskin to make a hanger.Three coats of satin polyurethane have been applied to protect the finish.

I've been working on this mask off and on for some time.Sitting here right now, trying to write a description seems next to impossible.Emotions that there are no words to describe. Some of the dreams and visions I had while working on it took me back to the Trail of Tears, walking alongside our Ancestors.I literally felt the anquish, the fear, the feelings of betrayal.I found myself picking the mask up,laying it back down because I by no means felt like I could possibly express in artform what was being shown to me.I finally took a step back and asked the Ancestors to give me a clear sign that this mask was finished. They said it was.
