This gourd mask measures 5 3/4" wide and 15 1/4" tall,including the feathers.
I see alot of faces in my dreams as well as during meditation and would wonder who they were, and why was I seeing so many of them.Finally,when I sat still and really listened to the ancestors, I realized I was supposed to share what I was seeing by making gourd masks. Bringing their faces out of the past,into the present.I will do the best that I can,to do justice to what they show me and honor them by bringing them back to life and sharing with all of you.
I started by cutting a gourd in half and sanding both inside and outside.The inside has been dyed black and the outside chocolate.For the rest of the color on the face I used acrylic paints.On the forehead are the colors of the Cherokee four directions.The earrings are dentalium shells.The headdress is a combination of turkey,blackbird,quail,and peacock-pheasant feathers.I attached a leather loop as a hanger.
