The Banahaw Man
Vics Magsaysay
Palad (meaning palm or fate in Tagalog) and I met almost two decades ago when he guided us in our ascent to Mt. Banahaw, a two-hour drive south of Manila. Since we are both lovers of the mountain, it was so easy for both of us to become good friends. Whenever I hiked and camped alone in the mystic mountain, there were times I'd meet this guy. He was clean shaven that time.
Early this 2010, I didn't recognize him--he was sporting moustache, beard and had a long hair. This is why I was hesitant to approach him when our paths crossed while I was taking some shots of the Santa Lucia river. I asked him if he could pose for me before my point and shoot digital camera. He obliged. What I did notice was this Palad was no longer the same person I've known before--he exudes a distinct serenity in his consciousness. I bet it must have been "finding" himself over time while being immersed all by himself in the mystic mountain. He also mentioned having been included in the cast of an American TV show when they were filming a documentary about the fabled mountain.
Friends do come and go. Sometimes we will meet them again...and sometimes never. That's what we call "Gulong ng PALAD" or wheel of life or fate.
