 Laurino Scafone
ARTIST STATEMENT
Laurino is a self taught master. He has spent 40 years perfecting the process and working through the complexities of his oil-on-marble masterpieces.
The artist was born in 1938 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. His family was from the region of Catanzaro in Calabria, Italy yet his love of for Italy extents to a distinct and historic area called Riva Delli Schiavoni in Venice. Not surprising, this and surrounding areas of Venice are the major subject matter for many of his creations.
Laurino began painting at the age of 20. Professional schooling lasted only a few months, due to his unwillingness to compromise his own artistic vision and passions.
Inspired by the old masters, particularly Giovanni Antonio Canaletto, Laurino first began creating oil paintings on hand-shaped imported marble in 1970. His use of oils, unpolished marble and ancient techniques are nothing less than spectacular.
To date, Laurino Scafone has never been formally exposed to the public. He has only sold to private collectors over the years. He is now ready to share his masterful gifts from God to the world.
