Description
This is the last of a series of three similar paintings of troops of tulips, marshaled and disciplined for spring. In this painting, the troops stand guard in front of a stream running through another nearby garden.
"Tulips are simple, elegant flowers. In the spring broad leaves push up from the bulbs and through the soil. When blooming season arrives, a single stem (there are multi-stemmed varieties available) sends up a tight, green bud. When opened it bears a singular cup-shaped flower. Blossoms can be found in every color but true blue. However, the designation of the color black is arguable because black tulips aren't a true black but a midnight purple." This quote comes from "Tulip: History and Culture: Perennial Favourite for Gardeners, Artists and Florists" by Melissa Howard.
So how does such a simple flower as a tulip have such an effect on people? In the early 1600's, it set off a financial crisis. In fact, tulipomania is a word that is in use today to describe things like the dot.com . crisis of the nineties and the subprime crisis of today. Is the blossoms simplicity the key? By small things, great things come to pass, I have heard. Think of how the little rudder of a giant ocean liner steers it. Of course, it takes a long time for the large ship to turn around with the rudder, but turn it will. Another way to say the same thing is that less is more. The lesson of the tulip is and has been an important one in my life. When life gets on fire with lots to do and many places to be, I find my productivity declines, and my frustration mounts. When simplicity returns, life just gets better!
And that's all I have to say about tulips, for now!
My Purpose:
This is a painting of the Southern Appalachian Mountain area where I live and work. I use the flowers and scenery found here as subjects for my work Occasionally someone will send me pictures of other places, or I might go there myself. I also use those. I am most fortunate to have been able to return to this area after years away. It's a funny thing about these mountains, though. They call you back home. The mountains and valleys here speak to my soul, as they have always done to those fortunate enough to hear their voices. They spoke to those who came before to settle these hills, and to those who were already here, the Native Americans. These were my ancestors. When I listen to the mountains, I hear the voices of my fathers and mothers whispering in the winds. I share our voices and hearts in these vignettes of this place.
My Bio:
I was born in Eastern Tennessee, the youngest of the four kids of a school teacher and an industrial engineer. I started painting in oils when I was twelve years old. Although I have completed commissions in watercolors and acrylics over the years, oils have always been my passion. I love the way they blend together, the glow they give to the subject matter. I love being able to lay down a brush stroke and have the stroke's impression add to the composition. I even love the odor of oil paint! I went to East Tennessee State University and majored in Fine Arts, but wound up leaving school to major in mothering my five wonderful children. I didn't stop painting, though. When they were little I kept my current painting in the play pen while my kids were awake. I would often stay up late into the night painting after getting them to bed. We moved to Winston Salem for my husband's job and I took classes at the Winston Salem Fine Arts Guild. I also entered as many competitions as I could and won some awards. I haven't had a lot of formal training but I studied every thing I could get my hands on and painted as much as possible. After we moved to Florida, I gained representation through my first gallery, JET Gallery of Tampa. I got a lot of commissions through this gallery which included architect's renderings, landscapes and seascapes.
After moving to Hendersonville inWestern North Carolina, I taught oil painting and water color painting at Blue Ridge Community College in both Hendersonville and Brevard. I've done a number of one woman shows at various locations and have presented demonstrations and workshops. I have sold a lot of paintings. We recently moved to the Mars Hill area in the Northwest part of the state where we built a house with a wonderful studio, my dream studio. The house is pretty nice, too. We live in a rural mountain area. The nearest town of any size is Asheville, about 15 miles away from us. I love my quiet, peaceful surroundings and am grateful every day that I am a painter. I hope you enjoy seeing my work as much as I enjoyed painting it.
