Biography
Owen Leo JOHNSONLEO, Lion of an Artist! That's what they say about me. Know me, please, as
Owen Leo JOHNSON, born off the Caribbean waters on the sunny island of
Barbados in the communities of Black Rock-Spooner's Hill, St. Michael's.
In the early 1960's I took myself to Montreal, Quebec, Canada where I was the owner of Studio Leo & Gallery. Here I am in my studio in Toronto, Ontario, painting, painting, painting.
My styles range from abstract to realism, to the surreal, to symbolism, pointillism (lots!), plus portraits and, of course, Leographics-- especially depicting your own style. Exhibitions have been my delight in Canada, the United States, and, naturally, in Barbados. I am a classic artist.

Indeed, I have had a welter of exhibits and I am a very serious student of art.
The diplomas I have earned are from the Montreal Academy of Art and the
University of Toronto Information and Technology Design Centre.

Memberships are important. Count me in, among others, with the
Scarborough Arts Council and the Barbados Arts Council.
I have made numerous presentations to institutions, elementary and secondary schools and how delighted I am that one of my original works of art was presented to Mr. & Mrs. Nelson Mandela and another to the Barbados Public Library. I am a founding member of B’DOS House Montreal & a Founding member of Black History & Beyond – University Health Network, and was the chosen designer for the logo of both these organizations.

Then there are a number of awards. The Municipality of Laval gave me their Outstanding Achievement Award. In addition I received awards from the Quebec Government's Ministry of Commerce, from the Warner Lambert Company, and the Scarborough Arts Council honored me with Best of Show and First Prize Award.
The City of Toronto also awarded me Best of Show.

Focusing on young artists in Montreal, I was a founding member and Past President of La Societe Pour La Promotion des Artistes Noirs du Quebec, (Society for the Promotion of Quebec Black Artists), working tirelessly for the recognition of black artists. I was deeply involved in a television program on that subject and was interviewed on CBC Radio, Montreal. The Union United Church of Montreal bestowed on me their recognition for my artistic services. In that same year I was awarded Best of Show in Arts Week Toronto. Then in 1999 I designed the logo for Caribbean Anglican Consultation and in 2000 I did the same for
Black History and Beyond - University Health Network. And that's not all.
In the same year I designed a moose for the Toronto Outdoor Art Moose-EUM.

Exhibits and sales were marked in 2000 with a two-week exhibition at Toronto's Hudson's Bay Company. In 2003 I had the pleasure of donating some of my works of art to the yearly auction benefitting Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, and I continue to do so every year. And I am an annual participant in St. Clement's Visual Art Show. In 2004 I designed Habitat for Humanity (St. Clement's House logo). In 2006 I was able to exhibit in the historic house of J.E.H. Macdonald (Member of the Group of Seven) and was also a member of the delegation that presented a proposal to the City of Vaughan for them to create an Arts Council. Yes, in 2007 I again exhibited in Muse 07 Arts for Life at Sunnybrook.
In addition I was represented in "Sacred Expressions" -- a collection of art by the Anglican Church of Canada Artists and I also exhibited at the Historic House of J.E.H. Macdonald in Thornhill, Ontario. In 2009,A presentation of one of my works of art depecting Toronto/Barbados was presented by the DLP Barbados (Canada) To The Honorable David THOMPSON, Prime Minister of Barbados, W.I., An Art Exhibition celebrating the 43rd Independence of Barbados at Cajun Bajan Cafe,Toronto.
