Sperm Whale beside an iceberg 2(1).J
Alfred Memelink
Sperm Whale Diving Beside an Iceberg
This painting was inspired after observing a rare site of two blue whales feeding on krill in pack ice. It was my first close encounter with whales and occurred during a recent NIWA voyage to Antarctica.
There are two types of whales, toothed and baleen. Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales and dine mainly on squid and fish. They were named by early whalers who thought that the oily fluid in their heads was sperm. The substance is actually spermaceti and it is believed that it aids with buoyancy during deep dives.
