Waterlily - "Lotus Light"
Melanie Elliott
The lotus species (Nymphaea) are remarkably handsome aquatic plant, well worthy of a place in a watercolor landscape. The yellow flowers of the Nymphaea Mexicana species rest on in the water amongst large green leaves - leaves that are redish on the underside.
This yellow variety is sometimes called the sun-lotus or banana waterlily and is open from midday to late afternoon. It grows best in shallow ponds and quiet backwaters of major rivers and lakes.
The white waterlily (Nymphae alba) is more common to my homeland of Eastern Canada and I so well recall failed attempts, as a child, to pick a lily for display on the family dinner table. Indeed nature has placed these wonderous flowers in our wetland landscape and out of harms way.
It's beauty remains in the eye of the beholder.
