As an art student in Trinidad and the U.S., she has assimilated experience with various materials including oil, acrylic, charcoal, graphite, clay, plaster, wood and wax. In the past, her drawings and paintings have generally portrayed an eye for realism in nature and the human form, but more recently, she has become inspired by the Surrealist movement of the early 1900’s as well as the Abstract Expressionist era. Her work has evolved from replicating nature as we see it, to more ‘expressionate’ dreamlike scenes and sometimes fantasy.
Within the last few years, Marsha has explored various new materials with which to create her installation sculptures, but currently favors MDF board – cutting, carving and constructing abstracted buildings and scenes as an alternative to furnishing walls with paintings.
Influenced at an early age by the Italian Renaissance, she began her formal art training at Ian Attong’s School of Art in San Fernando where she gained experience with graphite and chalks and subjects such as the human face and figure. In 1995, she furthered her art education at Miami Dade College in Florida where she earned an Associate Degree after have the privilege to study under modern painter and sculptor, Robert Huff.
After returning to Trinidad in 1999, she opened art classes for teens and adults and is now teaching privately in Port-of-Spain, Chaguanas & San Fernando. Her classes include programs in drawing, painting and calligraphy.
Marsha enjoys exploring new materials and manners of expression and believes that self expression, imagination and the will to push beyond the norm are necessary for artistic growth. |
