STANIA
Linda Kennedy
oil on linen canvas,
32"x 40"
Stania was my high-school art teacher who later became my friend and mentor. She arrived in Canada in 1968 as a refugee from communism in what was then known as Czechoslovakia. She had to learn to speak English on the job and to adjust to life as an immigrant. A few years later, I was the foreigner struggling to make myself understood in a language which was not my mother tongue when I went overseas to study art in France and Spain. My respect and appreciation for immigrants remains deeply entrenched as a result of this experience. There are many unsung heroes working and living among us who have sacrificed much to enjoy the opportunities so many take for granted.
