Big Tube
Jan Cilliers de Wet
This is from the same day as "Time Out", one of the band members playing what I eventually found out was a shoulder-mounted tuba, aka
sousaphone if my research is correct.
I was originally drawn to the large circle of the opening in relation to the player's head, but struggled to find the composition. Quite by accident the solution was revealed by the block of colour to the left, some animal skin and fabric on display at one of the market stalls.
The treatment for the horn itself was unclear until I realised that it was, as usual, about the paint. It took some time to find the balance of colour and weighting but I'm very satisfied with the end product.
A background meaning that emerged in the execution was that the dark centre of the tuba is rather like the black hole that holds our galaxy together, and I imagined its formative gravity a bit like the original sound of creation, working rather nicely with the deep bass of the instrument and combined with the guiding spirit of the musician.
