King of Streets
Jan Cilliers de Wet
Also based on the community band event that "Time Out" and "Big Tube" were derived from, this one focuses on the audience that had gathered to listen on the pavement.
By far the most intensely involved with the music was this street-person and his woman, easily the poorest people in the crowd and quite possibly having a grander time than anyone else.
Their vitality and joy in the moment made them an unavoidable subject for my probing lens, and this is just one of the possible paintings to be extracted from the shots I took.
In practice it's been a very tricky piece to solve. The face resolved quite quickly but finding the rest of the piece to support it has proved to be a slow and difficult journey. After 3 months of this it's very nearly done but I've begun to lose my ability to see it, so I've put it on the back burner and am getting on with new work.
