Going Home
Jan Cilliers de Wet
Although this is the last in the "Baptism" series it was the first one I painted. It was something of a breakthrough piece in that I followed an instinct to break the normal rules of composition in order to realise a feeling the subject evoked in me.
Having done so I was dubious about its reception, but in fact it was extremely well received, one of those occasions that have taught me to trust the feeling and not my head.
A fascinating thing that often happens is that something will essentially paint itself as I wave brushes and paint about, and in this case it was the leading figure on the right. I had to work quite hard on the others, but he simply fell into place. I guess he knows where he's going.
