Built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition by Bernard Maybeck, designed to give eloquence to the mood of melancholy that Maybeck desired for his masterful stage set. To assist in this mood, a large reflection pond with natural luxuriant foliage and beautiful attending live waterfoul was designed to enhance the night lighted palace in all of its reflective beauty for San Francisco's strolling viewers.
Today it is even more beautiful with age and loving care. The home of the amazing scientific Exloratorium,
a fine theater,and a contemporary art gallery.
