I have painted for thirty years and studied with many well known artists.
To paint is to live. I am happiest when planning and working on my creations.
Collage, mixed media, experimental, and abstract painting have been my creative outlets.
The personal rewards are very satisfying.
Peter Buttross, a poet, expresses his insights into my paintings in the following piece.
"Whether she is rendering human portraits, landscapes, or still-lifes, Helen Langlow offers the viewer a veritable mask of her subject, but a mask that reveals as opposed to one that conceals. One is tempted to call her "an elegantly composed abstract expressionist". And it is her ability to control her level of abstraction that gives her work both accessibility and depth.
Prominent in the work of Langlow is the radical portrayal of women--maid, mother, crone, and even courtesan. And what women they are! They all seem to desire to be known, yet they all seem to remain, by force majeure,
essentially mysterious. And that is perhaps Ms. Langlow's revelation to us.
Stylistically and technically, her work finds a true underlying kinetic equilibrium. In the detail, her line is both vibrant and contoured; on the whole, it is as intricately harmonious as the elusive planets and the fixed stars. Her colors are a riotous celebration of vision and courage. It is as if each color were a precise word, and each line a felt-thought, or
vice-versa. The overwhelming impression is joyously and lovingly heretical.
But, first of all and last of all, the paintings of Helen Langlow give pleasure--to the eye and to the mind. And in ways we have never seen or felt before."
