I am a retired woodcarver, signmaker and stained glass artist from New York.. The itinerant lifestyle of an artist made me want to capture in my paintings the scenes around where I lived, such as the view out my window, before I was gentrified out of my living or studio space, so my work is very much a travelogue of the development of neighborhoods around New York City. Many of the subjects of my paintings are gone, bulldozed in Urban Renewal schemes. My love of American railroads also involves the same nostalgia. One day in the early 1970's we were surrounded by this plethora of colorful rail operations, then they were all gone forever. I was born and raised in an industrial neighborhood of Queens NY and am comfortable with empty urban street scenes. You are safe on an empty street. And an empty street is blessedly quiet. It is that still hush that I try to capture in my work. The colors of the city are also artificial and garish, chosen by an amatuer eye. I try to portray them as such.
I did carved wood signs from 1967 till now, most with a historical design.I especially enjoyed being involved in downtown redevelopment projects. I made, but mostly restored and repaired stained and leaded glass windows for over 30 years. |
