Pressently Living in Northeastern Florida, after spending time in New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Georgia, California, and Hawaii. I've been hand-carving chess sets and tables for the last 14 years, and recently have become involved in carving wood spirits on walking sticks. I also teach wood carving classes to beginners and advanced carvers in my hometown as well as Jacksonville, Florida.
I strive to make artwork that is both beautiful to look at and display while at the same time encouraging the viewer to actually 'touch' it. I have no employees and nothing is outsourced. Each piece, each board, and every table, and each wood spirit walking stick is hand crafted by me. Making chess sets is all I do.
For myself, there is nothing like wood! I do not mean the cheap veneer work that is so prevelant in today's plastic society. My work comes from solid hardwoods and pines. I spend hours choosing woods, that once carved, show the beauty and charachter of the grains in different species. When woodwork is done right, you can't stop yourself from putting your hands on it. There is something warm and inviting, some inexplicable connection that draws you in.
I've come to settle on 'chess sets' for two reasons. Chess is a game that requires two people sit down face-to-face. It brings family and friends together for personal interaction. It does NOT have to be plugged in or require a CD and a computer. It removes us from daily riggor, and in most cases, it was someone very special to us who taught us how to play, like your parents, another relative, or close friend. When you play you are always reminded of that person. For me, it was my father.
I only will get involved with the most unique themes when making my sets, I don't like little 'dinky' pieces with little 'dinky' boards, my sets are big stand alone works of art, easy to play with, and most importantly, each set has special meaning for it's owner, this is why I accept private commissions. I can make a chess set from any theme, idea, pass-time or hobby, occupation, literally anything! Accepting private commissions allows both of us to be personally involved in the creation of something very special. For me, the collaboration between artist and owner is very important! It gives you, the owner, something nobody else in the world has. Let's explore the possibilities! Contact me at epkingsa@bellsouth.net to discuss any questions or ideas you may have!
