Ed Jurgensen started serious painting in 1996, five years prior to retiring from a successful career as professor and banker in USA, Germany and Chile (he holds a doctoral degree from Harvard). He initially worked under the guidance of well known Chilean painters while studying art at Catholic University in Santiago, graduating in 2001. Since then, painting has been his main undertaking.
Although he still considers himself an amateur painter (selling his works has not been his priority), he soon developed his art into a personal style, technique and proposition which he called "Metamorphism". It is basically in line with abstract expressionism, freeing itself further from traditional painting rules other than color balance and composition. Usually, his works require the attention and imagination of the viewer, and allow personal and changing readings, depending on the surrounding circumstances and inner feelings of the observer. The apparent dynamic "transformations" of the paintings in the mind of the viewer, often trigger an unexpected world of nature full with familiar and imaginary creatures and species that contribute to the long enjoyment of his creations.
So far, Ed has been shy of commercial galleries and exhibitions, although occasionally he has accepted participating in collective shows. He is very active in his "new career", which includes writing a book on Metamorphism. He believes this approach to expressionism as well as his underlying themes, are well rooted in the international history of art and quite responsive to the present times. |
