David Blake is a multifaceted man who has been blessed with many unique and varied talents. David has been, in one form or another, an artist his entire life.
Born in 1956 in Annapolis, Maryland, and raised most of his childhood years in North Carolina, David recalls the seasonal beauty of the coastal eastern States in contrast to the western climate of California, in which he now resides.
The son of a career military man, David was afforded the opportunity to live in other parts of the US, such as Hawaii. It was there that he fell in love with the tropical elements of the area, which inspired David to create many pieces of art over the years, honing his natural talent within. He pays tribute to the islands daily by wearing his trademark Hawaiian shirts.
Although David's talent was apparent at a very young age, he never had the opportunity to attend art classes in school, nor allowed to use a scholarship won in an art contest. David continued to develop his art on his own by drawing cartoon characters, art projects for school in science and history, and even digging up the red clay soil of North Carolina to create miniature sculptures. By the age of 17 David had blossomed into an artist well known for his ability to capture the character of the subjects he created. This ability extended to his photography, which he started merely as a tool for his creations. It would eventually become an important part of his artistic talents. The subject matter of David's photography includes breathtaking shots of majestic natural beauty and candid shots of people. His work has been nationally published and sold worldwide.
David Blake possesses an inherent and commanding talent. He is currently handcrafting full scale, 3-dimensional trees made entirely out of copper. The plant life he sculpts appear to be alive, but are completely hand cut, hand stamped, formed, soldered, and painted copper. Most of the sculptures boast semiprecious stones like Swarovski crystals, pearls, jade, and more. The results are both aesthetically pleasing and awe inspiring.
That strong tropical influence from his childhood, together with the inspiration that springs from his love of nature, form the threads that are woven into the amazing tapestry that is the art of David Blake. |
