Clifford MADSEN
Australian Indigenous Visual Artist/Sculptor
Biography

Cliff Madsen, born Mossman 1959, is a member of the Kuku Yalangi community, an Australian FNQ rainforest Aboriginal language group. He started painting in his early forties but has carved and sculpted North Queensland timbers for most of his life after his father introduced him to the craft.

He grew up in the hills near Port Douglas before moving north of the Daintree River between China Camp & Bloomfield River Community, where his parents lived and leased 30 square miles of land running a small cattle station for over thirty years. Cliff has resided in the Johnstone Shire (now known as the Cassowary Coast Regional Shire) since 1985 with his own family and works fulltime in the banana farming industry.

Cliff Madsen has a very strong kinship/connection with the land and natural environment of Far North Queensland. This is reflected in the images of wildlife, patterns, colours, timbers and wood grains, which dominate his work.

He has mainly exhibited locally in Innisfail art-curated shows and competitions and won several awards. His work has been purchased for both public and private collections.

Kerryn MADSEN-PIETSCH
Contemporary Australian Visual Artist/Educator

Artist's Statement
"Often using multiple mediums, mixed-media and collage processes, I piece together abstract ideas, concepts, visual elements and pieces of experience which is at the very heart of the creative process and journey. It all acts as a vehicle for projection and exploration of self, linking and connecting to the human psyche, exposing conscious and subconscious realms, the alchemy of relationships, while transcending spirit with the Divine.

Added to the generative mix are archetypes and symbols developed over time: the thread ‘tracks’ are a metaphor for transition between states of being, planes of paint, spirit and matter; forms of vessels, grids and planes echo containment within levels; colour resonates with symbology, emotion and memory. By creating these ‘relationships’, one is ever mindful of reality, illusion, the dynamic forces, energies and thoughts that connect/disconnect all things visible and invisible."
