Weeping Wisteria tree
Pacific Wonderland (see more by this artist)
Artist: Lee Mannikko, Seattle, WA
Studio: Pacific Wonderland Designer Art studio
Weeping wisteria trees are treasured in Japan and some of these grand old specimens can be found in their botanical gardens. They are also grown in the Northwest where I live and give beautiful cascades of purple, magenta and white flowers in the spring and summer months. Wisteria trees are typically grown from vines that have matured over years of tender pruning and placement until they spiral up to create a tree like formation. I chose a fine old Wisteria tree from a Japanese garden to model my Weeping Wisteria tree sculpture. These age old trees are visited by many tourists as well as local residents and revered for their beauty. I tried to capture the look of the heavy clusters of purple flowers as they hang down from the thicker vine like branches. I variegated tones of pale to dark amethyst for the blossom clusters. The old and weathered trunk is encased with vines that ultimately find the sunlight and break into full bloom.
For this piece I chose two different amethyst gemstones, Brazilian, with its pale purple-magenta tones and African, which has rich dark purple tones to achieve the color gradient used for the blossoms. I used 26, 24 and 22 gauge sterling silver plated wire, which I antiqued by hand to show the shadows in the trunk and some leaves. The silver leaves fulfill the look of the tree and add grandeur to the piece. The sculpture is mounted on finished Manzanita burl wood.
Gemstone Carat weights:
Brazilian Amethyst: 1,050
African Amethyst: 1,000
Total Carats: 2,050

I saw this tree in the Neiman Marcus store in Virginia and it was stunning! Hard to take your eyes off of it. There were 6 trees there by this artist and one was more beautiful than the next. The quality is amazing! I will follow this artist to see what else she does!
Seller response: I often sell at Neiman Marcus stores and will continue to send new styles of my sculptures to these stores. I thank-you for your support and comments. |
