Autumn Splendor Tree
Artist: Lee Mannikko, Seattle, WA
Studio: Pacific Wonderland Designer Art studio
Autumn trees are a favorite of mine and they lend themselves to beautiful sculptured trees. We have many maple trees in our front yard wooded area and the variegated greens turning to gold and oranges were too tempting to pass up. I chose to do a painted effect on this tree, depicting how a great maple changes its colors as the season progresses. The green leaves gradually change into a light gold and then into a brilliant orange until just a few dark brown leaves remain that would soon drop to the ground.
For this piece I chose to use four different gem stones to get the color gradient; Spessartite Fanta orange Garnets, Carnelian, dark Amber and Peridot gemstones. I used 26 and 24 gauge gold plated wire, which is hand antiqued to show shadows in the trunk and branches. To add depth to the piece I have sprinkled in some gold leaves. The piece is mounted on finished Manzanita burl wood.
Total carat weight for this tree is over 1,000 carats.
Individual Gemstone Carat weights (close approximations):
Spessartite Garnets: 200 carats
Carnelian: 600 carats
Peridot: 300 carats
Amber: not applicable, not a mineral
