On the 10th April, 1968, the New Zealand Interisland Ferry, Wahine, founded whilst tryign to enter Wellington Harbour during a huge storm. The Wellington Harbour steam tug, SS Tapuhi, made a brave effort to try and tow her to safety but was unable to and the ferry sank. The Tapuhi carried on with the rescue operation.
