Troika Sledge in Winter Landscape
Highlands Fine Art (see more by this artist)
This fabulous 1936 painting of a man and woman wrapped in a colorful shawl,in a decorated troika may be a wedding scene. It was done by G. Schardin, and it is actually a copy of a work by the Russian master Philippe Andreevitch Maliavin (1868-1940). The original “Winter Troika”-which is approximately the same size- was painted in 1933. Maliavin, who was known for his bold use of color, and often large-scale, dramatic paintings, emigrated from Russia to Paris in 1922. He toured extensively in Europe from that point on, and he is known to have toured and exhibited in Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, England and Sweden in 1933. Schardin is an unknown European artist, perhaps a student, but certainly an admirer of Maliavin. Given that this copy was painted in 1936, it is conceivable that the two artists could have met during this period. Maliavin’s “Winter Troika” ( p. 100, Art and Auction, April 2005) sold in London at Sotheby’s in May 2004 for over $76,000. "Maliavin" is etched into the upper right corner of this painting.
