Giant iceberg, B15J, and Pancake Ice
Alfred Memelink (see more by this artist)
An iceberg 24Nm long, 14 Nm wide, (350square Nm) and grounded
With ice cliffs 30 – 35m high above the sea, cruising past this was actually more like sailing beneath the White Cliffs of Dover.
Big icebergs are given names, this one is already 8 years old, born in 2000. B15J is the sole surviving remnant of the Iceberg B-15, the largest iceberg and largest floating object ever recorded and the size of Jamaica
Pancake Ice is the next stage of the sea refreezing. This sheets of grease ice break up into small plates that gently collide with one another thus becoming rounded and forming furry uplifted edge. Water ripples splash over the furry edges to build the edges up further. The sea takes on the appearance of a white lily pond.
