Sunset over a Refreezing Ross Sea

When the summer days again start getting shorter and the sea temperature drops below minus 1.8 degrees, the sea begins to refreeze. If the conditions are calm and right, the sea can freeze solid again in a few days. Small crystals of ice form on the surface termed frazil then in the next stage when frazil crystals clump together, it forms grease ice.
