When new sand dunes are formed they must grow and establish themselves before the sand shifts beneath their "feet." American dune grass helps to establish and preserve dunes. The grass has long underground stems that send shoots upward and roots downward. These stems can bury down as much as 8 feet and anchor American dune grass and the surrounding shifting sand. This creates places where other dune plants can survive.
