Christmas Country Scene Folk Art
Donna Hickerson (Young) (see more by this artist)
Acrylic on 4 3/4 x 16-inch wood protected with satin varnish. Because wood is one of my favorite surfaces to paint, I was delighted to have found this old, interestingly shaped piece and decided it would make a great canvas for a warm, inviting Christmas Scene. The age and imperfection of the wood give the painting a rustic look.
When I was growing up, my family and I would travel to eastern Kentucky to spend the holidays with relatives. This little painting is typical of the scenery I viewed looking out the car window as we all drove on our merry way to our country destination.
The scene is in an oblong oval-shape, framed in bright red with shiny gold dots to give the impression of gazing into a Christmas ornament. The houses resemble barns and are painted red and yellow with white snow covered roofs. There are green evergreen trees scattered though out the painting with large drops of snow. The large barren tree in the forefront has brown and grey tones. At the beginning of the curb there is a festive grey mailbox filled with freshly delivered Christmas cards and packages. The blue mountains in the back loom over grounds and the winding road is a mixture of white, grey, brown and green.
Mini easel not included.
