Herne is the ghostly hunter of Windsor Forest, in England. Shakespeare, Herne’s earliest literary source, describes Herne the Hunter as ‘a spirit’ and ‘a keeper’ of the forest, who is seen to ‘walk round about an oak, with great ragged horns’ hideously howling at midnight during winter-time. And sometimes through the shrouds of mist one spies Herne riding atop his black steed with hounds and owl in pursuit.
