The Rock
jan raats (see more by this artist)
‘The Rock’ is the elephant that has been present in the studio these past few months, on a large canvas (153cm x 95cm) that she dominates. Pushed down into the bottom right of the painting, she has space to retreat into, protecting the calf in her shadow.
Looking at the colours for the painting, I feel a bit like a wine taster trying to find the blueberries with overtones of sunshine, southerly breezes and footrot. Is it blue or green, and if blue what shade? Is that a slight tinge of Raw Sienne? Should that be colour produced by Daler-Rowney, Rembrandt, or perhaps the French manufacturer Charvin, with its creamy texture?? A bit fine for the rough texture of elephant skin, and the raw Amsterdam Oil may be more suitable? Perhaps the paint produced by the Italian manufacturer Maimerie would be better, but Amanda has to bring that from New York City. For the blue, the rich Cobalt blue of Utrecht house colour has the best brilliance, particularly when contrasted with the subtler Italian colours of Ferrario Van Dyk – the final bits in the tube - and it’s not quite as good replacement Sennelier colour, but bought next to the Sienna in Paris with its memories. Such is my paint basket.
