Jessica Pi-Hua Hsu’s parents come from Fujien China, but she was born in Yu Lin, Taiwan in 1957. Though as a girl she loved to do pencil drawings on the wall. She later received her Bachelors Degree in Education from National Cheng-Chi University, Taiwan in 1979. In 1987 she did graduate study in the History of Art at the University of California, Berkley, U.S.A, and in 1989 she majored in painting at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, U.S.A. In 1993 she returned to Taiwan from the United States and Europe, and by chance she came in contact with and was converted to Buddhism. Since then she has lived simply in the mountains, spending time between writing, professional painting and drawing, flower arrangement art, and cross-field artistic creations including impromptu dance and painting which attract people at first sight. She loves to be a contemporary pilgrim in the realm of art!
Her “scholarly abstract painting” uses western media but has a unique oriental calligraphic style while the tone of her work possesses a vivid spirit, blending minimalism and the abstract with cubism and color fields. Between unrestrained yet tranquil, concise, beyond time and space, it is very easy for her to receive and release. Her works express life’s magnanimity, power, strength, sweetness, and philosophical thought.
From her first exhibition in 1982 until now, her creations have been full of lively power, while maintaining a calm reserve throughout numerous shows for 25 years. Her oriental mood and the scholarly atmosphere of her works attract the collector’s preference from all over the world, and are widely received in both private and public collections. Her international art website has no national boundary, and deeply receives the art lovers’ browsing and response.
In May 2007, Capital Art Center at both CIGE 2007 Beijing and Art Taipei 2007 highly recommends Jessica Pi-Hua Hsu’s creative work, her Feng Shui of the Heart Series. The carefree energy of “neither too much nor too little” expresses her harmonic comprehension of the body, heart, soul, and nature, wind, and water. The works include painting creations and recorded DV images.
