Egyptian Necklace-Collar & Earrings
Maureen W. Clifton (see more by this artist)
Item has continuted to be an extrememly popular item on Medieval Art Misty Isles! Price has been lowered permanently.
This Egyptian Necklace-Collar & Earrings were made by me & are for Sale as a Set only!
Construction of this happened without any outside directions what-so-ever, as creating it ll came to me ‘intuitively.’
I had never made anything like it & have made nothing like it since.
It was quite time-consuming & a great deal of work, taking more hours than I kept track of in completing it.
I made it in 1978 & it is now 2012. It has been in a Display Case for years.
In approaching the status of an ‘antique’ partly due to its age & some of the beads, spacers & other items used to make it, this item can be worn to grace a lady's neck or displayed in a frame (no frame included).
This item is as fashionable today as it was 34 years ago or as it might have been 5,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt!
There are 3 views of this set herein: 1.) the necklace with its earrings, 2.) bottom portion of the necklace in a close view & 3.) its earrings in a close view.
This Egyptian Collar Necklace was quite a project. I made most of it outside at a park near where I lived at the time. I felt it needed to be constucted in Nature to honor the ancient Egyptian culture!
TO create it, I used a ‘Styrofoam Board’ (the kind trim was wrapped on at stores in those days).
I drew my 1st circle for the shape of the collar on the board in ink. I made the smallest circle 1 inch larger than my neck to the clasps, since the chain clasp is adjustable. I graduated each row of beads about .50 to .75 of an inch, so it would fit over the lower neck & collarbone area & lay flat.
I placed the spacer bars onto the form with sewing pins, so the additional 3 strands would be evenly spaced. It worked well to use sewing pins to keep it in place & shape it as I strung the beads & the spacers onto craft wire.
My thought behind it was when I wore it that it conformed to my neck & collarbone area well & it did exactly that!
I used parts from an early 1940s necklace my mother had given me – thinking I could use it for my medieval activities. I took apart the necklace & used its spacer bars to separate the strands.
I decided to make earrings to go with it. I already had other Egyptian figures & gemstone earrings, so took apart those & used for parts that extend in front from the outer strand of the necklace. Those items include: Pyramids, Ankhs, Jet droplets, Red Jasper & Tiger Eye.
Beads are glass seed beads, faceted black & faceted amber glass to represent Jet & Amber. I wanted an amber color to pick up the hues in the Tiger Eye which it did.
I used colors in my wearable art I had seen in items of Ancient Egyptian Jewelry in museums & books.
I used the original clasp from the necklace with spacers & it works well because it is adjustable.
I have worn it over a turtleneck shirt, as well or with my Egyptian clothes (for dance). In wearing it over a turtle neck which really is quite stunning, as it shows off the necklace, I need the necklace looser, so I am glad I made it like I did with extra room.
The craft wire has stood the test of time! I decided craft wire we have these days is not nearly as good as what was available in 1978.
See the item “A Real Guise - Halloween - 1983” herin on this site. I am wearing this necklace in the photos. The chain seen in those photos goes to a small brass engraved Koal bottle. Koal is the ‘black’ used for Egyptian Eye Make-up though I did not use Koal that day. I did not feel it was something I wanted to risk getting in my eyes while working in my office all day, as Koal flakes & sheds.
Having thet make-up on from 6:00 AM until 6:00 PM was amazing! Modern make-up did the job well!
