Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz, and is consideredto be the traditional birthstone for February. The 6x12mm amethyst drops are faceted to capture the light from every angle and are dangling inside a sterling silver frame in the shape of a leaf. Custom oversized (22mm or approx. 7/8") sterling silver ear wires that are hammered for added texture. Overall length of the earring is 57mm (approx. 2 1/4"). Handcrafted - One of a kind. Fun Fact: Amethyst was considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it. Mythology: In Greek mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine, was pursuing a maiden named Amethystos, who refused his affections. Amethystos prayed to the gods to remain chaste, a prayer which the goddess Artemis answered by transforming her into a white stone.
