Dragon Castle - See the Dragon?
Maureen W. Clifton

(see more by this artist)

This “Dragon Castle” was drawn by Countess Dierdriana of the Misty Isles when she lived in the (then) Principality of Artemisia, Kingdom of Atenveldt (Western Colorado). It was inspired by a cloud seen one day that looked like a wispy, though imposing dragon. An idea struck about a mystery medieval castle having attached to it, a mythical dragon that appeared ‘out of thin air’ when needed & superimposed itself around & through the castle to frighten away any that would arrive to do harm. Yet, we cannot see any archers in the towers or Knights on the top of the walls, ready for battle, so the Dragon’s presence was all that was needed! The Dragon’s image fills the Moat & its head & tail are seen on either side of the castle. The Iron Gate is down, so the castle fortress is seemingly secure & welcomes no one into it. My imaginary castle is round with a large turret & a tower in the front that can be seen from miles away. There are 2 shorter turrets that are on the other side of the castle & unseen in this view (though I know they are there). The castle is viewed from slightly above, so the round courtyard & its curtain walls are seen. A white pennant is flying from the tallest tower. I do not know if a ‘white flag’ was used in medieval times, it just seemed like a good idea. There are rocks & trees on the left. In the lower right corner – hidden in the design -- is my signature: Dierdriana ’93 – so it means I drew it in 1993. I initially had desired my ‘Dragon Castle’ to be a newsletter cover for our shire. It ended up as ‘filler’ art, crowded on a page with other things & small. My whole premise was lost by that chronicler, as he did not bother to put in any information about my drawing that I had provided & did not bother to put in the main question: “Can you See the Dragon?” Oh well, it happens & I am unsure if he ‘got’ it. In the 2nd view seen herein, I have outlined the dragon with yellow dots in case anyone cannot see the dragon. I know people who cannot see shapes in clouds, why I added that. I always have seen shapes in clouds – ever since I was a wee lass.
