With a fine hand and a penchant for the unusual, Harry Russell gathers together mixed media materials and filters them through a wild imagination and a fearless spirit. His work, which is appealingly free and fanciful, tells a distinct story through an array of colorful characters which exist in a mysterious, surreal landscape. Russell’s eye for space sharpened through his experience working as an architect, and he uses it to shape his art, creating wild worlds for the viewer to explore. His work inspires a sense of wandering as subjects and viewers alike float in his intriguing universe. Through his use of vibrant splashes of color, the journey around the frame is broken up by decidedly playful yet reflective intervals. Many find Russell’s work to be reminiscent of Dali or Chagall in the sense that it captures a story that constantly continues to unfold within an unfettered imagination.
