‘Winged Dragon’ Archery Target
Maureen W. Clifton (see more by this artist)
The ‘Winged Dragon’ Archery Target, Countess Dierdriana of the Misty Isles’ imaginary dragon was drawn in 1990 onto cardboard with crayons. It is sitting on 2 hay bales some friends gave me that made a great archery target backdrop on my property in Austin, Colorado of 1.33 acres, surrounded some 350 acres of open fields. The hay bales sit in front of an old adobe chicken coop building, seen in an additional view. There was easily a range of 50 yards to shoot archery, which was nice for having events in the back yard. For the shoot in which this Winged Dragon was used, it was 30 yards & some of us used a crossbow. The red spot is the dragon’s heart or the ‘kill’ zone. Other areas were designated as certain points for ‘wounds’ or making the dragon extremely angry! My ‘Winged Dragon’ was drawn free hand & used at a Games Tournament in September 1990. I sponsored a Games Tournament each year when I lived in Western Colorado. At other times, I sponsored an Arts & Sciences Display & was a liaison for the SCA, as I was on the Delta County Board of Arts & Humanities. I submitted my photos & wrote an article for the Montrose Daily Press, because we knew one of the reporters, who was going to attend the event & could not. See that article in an additional view in which I was given credit under my real world name, Maureen Clifton. The reporter used my article as written. The “Winged Dragon’ is only one of many Archery Targets that I made over the decades & some were painted onto Styrofoam. I wished we had taken photos of some wonderful archery targets I made in the early 1980s! They were drawn onto refrigerator box cardboard. I used almost an entire box of crayons for the targets. There were 3 targets, each almost 6 foot tall of which 2 were Medieval Men in Armour. One was in chain-maille & we know that arrows can generally pierce chain-maille. One target was a Medieval Man in Armour wearing mostly steel plate with chain-maille under it. The 3rd was a Medieval Archer pulling a long bow & totally vulnerable! Each target had different points for ‘kill’ or ‘wound’ zones for whatever area was hit by the archers at 20, 30 & 40 yards. That competition was at Mills College in Oakland, California.
