'THE PAGE' - Medieval Helms, 1979
Maureen W. Clifton (see more by this artist)
This same design was on the Golden Rivers Current, though I no longer recall what month. When the chronicler asked me to change it & use for THE PAGE, August AS XIV (1979), I changed my original by changing the header & the month & SCA year at the bottom. The chronicler asked me to complete typing the back cover & inside of back & front covers with necessary information. Inside this issue were the first 12th Night Announcements, most for which I drew the art & calligraphed headers. To see those drawings, see my Heralds: ‘Here Ye! Hear Ye!’ & ‘Medieval Trumpet Herald’ & ‘Medieval Musician & Dancer’ -- previously posted herein. I have loved to draw helms since I first discovered I could draw them fairly decently, using hash mark shadowing to indicate their shapes. I think medieval helms are quite neat with their many designs & styles from so many eras & cultures. I seem to be attracted to more central European, Norse & Celtic helms. I have drawn a number of helms over the last 3 decades. I especially liked drawing a plume & mantling in different styles & drew my own Arms (Heraldic Device) with a style of mantling I liked. In the case of this drawing, it seemed to need a simple style of mantling. As I recall, mantling, comes from twisted fabrics used as a “torque” – Latin: either torque or torques – meaning a collar of twisted fabric used around the top of a helm & often 2 or 3 colors, generally the colors of one’s Arms (Heraldic Device) & secured with or without lengths as a plume in the back). I will list this item under British, because of the Medieval Helm styles & lack of another heading under which to place them. My original drawing (altered) of this newsletter cover was framed by me years ago. I gave it to a friend for his medieval collection. Time & other life challenges have caused me to look at this drawing & only know the names of some of the helms & what era. And, I have not looked them up. In the second view, at the bottom of that page is a blurb that is from the inside front cover with a small ender design I drew. When I did this drawing, I put out a challenge for naming the helms & its era. They really are specific & not fantasy helms.
