Heraldic Design for Queen Rowena
Maureen W. Clifton (see more by this artist)
In 1982, despite being quite ill from a serious medical condition, Maureen, as her counterpart, Dierdriana of the Misty Isles created this Plastern bodice for an in-going SCA Queen of the West, Rowena for an August Coronation, called Purgatorio. And, it was really hot that weekend. Do see the additional photos of this item.
The Heraldic Arms of Rowena includes a Calalily. When her reign was completed, she would be a Duchess, so Strawberry leaves & Strawberries were used to honor her new title.
A Queen is the Queen of Love & Beauty & represented by red roses, generally Heraldic Roses, though to create this peace in a collage of life-like flowers & vines in a vertical style, as Designer & Creator of this item, Dierdriana, used plants as they might have been depicted in ancient tapestries, winding, curving & one item flowing into the next. The embroidery was created using silk, metallic & cotton yarns.
Once the embroidery was finished, Dierdriana created the Plastern. Deep green velvet was cut on a bias (or oblique) & is its trim. It is layered for stability & lined in ecru silk. Strand faux pearls were hand stitched in place to create the final effect of the design & frame it.
The colors in the plastern were chosen by Rowena & could be worn with a variety of under gowns.
Please see the photo of the Coronation Court with everyone standing. Dierdriana is standing between the thrones as a Lady-on-Waiting to Her Majesty Rowena, wearing her own Heraldic Surcote.
Coronation was in the Wine Country in California & the Court wore Wine Colors!
Dierdriana entered the Plastern in the Dowager Princess of An Tir, Janeltis’ Heraldic Embroidery Contest at 12th Night & Won, receiving her 2nd pair of folding scissors on a golden cord with a scroll.
The greatest compliment ever received was when Her Highness Janeltis’ said, “This is, indeed, a masterpiece.” No finer compliment could have been given.
