"Old man Indian" CMR's first bronze
New discoveries art (see more by this artist)
Solid bronze of the "Old Man Indian", Signed on back with Russell's 1892-6 signature of "C M R". This is marked in deep impressions on its edge of 18/35 of the amount of ones made. I'm assuming these 35 bronzes were made by the Romans Bronze works Foundry, while one or more was made later in 98 by him, I believe the one which is noted in a C.M. Russell book, and say nothing of any markings on its edge. It is very similarly made in 1898 in size and shape only looking to be white bronze. I'm assuming it was made by Russell, from looking at the picture of it in the C.M. Russell book, while having his fancy signature and date of 1898 on its back-side.
These pieces of bronze of C.M.R's of this Old Man Indian, as far as I'm concerned, were not made to be sold. They were just given away by Charlie, to his traveling cowboy friends who would travel through or into Indian country. These were made to be strapped from the saddle straps which tied there lariats and lassos onto their saddles through the provided slot in them, for letting the Indians know,... that a friend of Russell's was a friend of the Indians. I believe these were made by him at Romans Bronze works at two different times, and at the time of the first set of 35, questioning why the foundry had not put their own foundry mark on them,.... is pretty evident in ones own mind and for others to figure out for themselves.
In looking back at the pictures provided, you might asked yourselves,.. what are those shiny places on that Old Man Indian? Well, I know the majority of you will not believe this and think that I'm crazy,... but here goes anyway.
First off, they did not arrive there by someone polishing the nose, eye brows, chin, hair and chest, just to rub off its patina. No,... it more than likely happen in an old cowboys levy pants back pocket, and being carried around with him as for the memorial piece of art work that it happened to be. It damn sure didn't happen hanging on a nail through that slot while in some old west gallery or museum!
Nope,... the old cowboy who carried this piece of bronze art work around more than likely in his back pocket, loved this artist cowboy Russell for his fine art work and his stories he would tell sitting around campfires. I I would have loved myself to hear the original owners stories he had told himself when showing this bronze piece off to all his own friends.
