The band Genesis has cycled through a few musical styles and a few different members. The group began while the original members were all in their mid-teens at the Charterhouse School, in Surrey, and recorded singles and a debut album in the late 1960s to little fanfare or media attention. Genesis began to build a fan base with the album "Nursery Crymes" and began to be known for its live show, in which lead singer Peter Gabriel enacted all kinds of theatrics with masks, makeup, and costumes. As the band was beginning to break into the U.S. market, Gabriel left the band and was replaced from within by drummer Phil Collins.
Subsequent albums grew increasingly poppy, and the group's albums,such as "And Then There Were Three" and the self-titled "Genesis," began to chart regularly. In 1983, Genesis released the multi-platinum "Invisible Touch," which produced a rash of hit singles and became their best-selling album to date. For the several years following "Invisible Touch" the band members worked on solo projects and, after their next album seven years later, Collins left the band. In more recent years, some of the original members of the band have embarked on a reunion tour and reissues of the band's material from their second album on have been released.
