Moose Antler #1
Kenneth Posselt (see more by this artist)
Pointilism. Pen and ink. Drawn on location where found.
This is a pen and ink drawing, of a fine moose antler, it was found by my neighbor on one of our recent forest forays. In search of some things tangible and some not. I sketched it on location exactly in the spot, it landed when it fell off the moose. Moose antlers are generally shed in December and January. The Bulls begin growing new antlers within a few weeks. They grow rapidly. Ready for dueling by late August. These are make status symbols among the moose clan. (And some moose hunters I think).
Don’t tackle something like this; unless you’re prepared to spend a lot of time on the way to completion, as usual I did the initial on location with pencil, and spent the better part of a day completing it. Worked over, with pen and ink. Used pointillism technique, then erased the pencil work. The pen and ink was completed at home at my leisure. The pen and ink work took about 40 hours. This drawing is fairly large 18x24 in original form. You can shorten your work time of course by doing smaller projects, which is in fact a good idea (going smaller). Until you get your feet wet, and a quire serious skill with pen and ink. One very good thing about pen and ink drawing: with this method you can stop working at any point. You can start again where you left off, at any time you which. There are many other mediums where you can’t do that, due to the various technique, and drying times etc.
This is made to order for a person who has to go holler at the kids, cook supper or go to work.
One other point to remember about working in pen and ink. When sketching on scene. With pencil. Make written notes on separate paper. (Use separate paper to avoid smearing graphite on your paper) Above all, make notes in your actual drawing by drawing. Elaborate with written notes in the note pad. You are reaching for contrast. Their unlimited shades of gray between black and white. A good pen and ink has many both black and white in a well-composed work can achieve stunning results.
Since we are working with nature here locating antlers to draw could be helpful if you desire to try this subject. The best time to search is in spring. Antlers are shed in the winter they sink into the snow and are also covered by successive snowstorms making them very difficult to locate. Wait till the snow melts. Also antlers are easier to find in low lands, and southern exposed that’s where the various antlered animals got o escape the deeper snow of the high places and deep forest.
Good Luck!
