The Chieftain
Aly Ben Salem (see more by this artist)
Aly Ben Salem, born in Tunis (1910) Salem received his artistic education fist in Tunis and thereafter at the Art Academy in Paris.
During Aly Ben Salem’s life he received numerous awards and was exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world. His paintings are spread all over the land; some of his best are in the National Museum in Stockholm, and can be found in the National Museums in Paris and Tunis.
Awarded the first prize for painting by the Tunisian government in 1936, Aly Ben Salem was also nominated as the Official Decorator of the Tunisian pavilion at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937. His pride in his culture and his strength of character is evidenced by his active participation in the liberation of his country. Feted for his role in the deliverance of Tunisia, he was awarded the title of Officer of Independence in 1980.
This Aly Ben Salem painting was completed while he was a young man. The last known appraisal of this painting was done by Ored Karlin on Sept. 17, 1957. Since that time the painting titled “Chieftain” has been in a private collection, hidden from public view. This painting the “Chieftain” attracts primarily through the individualistic use of color, but also through the man’s face, which captivates the viewer by its powerful and suggestive mystic. The 57.5 X 77.5 cm (one of his larger works) is a tempera painting on paper panel, with its original frame, and is in excellent condition. The painting has been appraised in 1957 and 2012. This painting has been in a private collection owned by my Swedish Aunt, Ingeborg Erixon, who left it to me, upon her death. The painting is currently in my home in Danville, CA.
