Jerry Special or Skid Row lithograph from stone 12.5x17. Drew it in 1953. Permanent collection at the Woodmere Art Museum. Philadelphia PA
I worked at Jerry's Special restaurant and the people you see are for real. Some of these people had college degrees, they drank sterno but first they rung it thru rye bread. I would pick them up in am and pose for us in art school. This is one of my favorite lithograph I would go there after classes and work till 11.00pm. what a way to learn about life. My father in-law is the one on the left behind the counter. He died too young. He built my first studio on Hoarder st. in Philly, I still think about him, he really was a great guy. He was born with a veil covering his face and died with a golden glow surrounding his body admitting a sweet smell. To me he was a saint. SO I DEDICATE THIS LITHOGRAPH TO HIM. His name was DIMITRI VLAHOS, I named my son after him "Dimitri". I WISH I HAD MORE PRINTS 3/3. BLOW IT UP AND ENJOY LOOKING AT IT, I STILL DO. Its a part of Philly history of the 50's.
Printed by my teacher "Benton Murdoch Spruance" he was afraid I would screw it up.
