My name is Stephanie Hansen and I am a young painter currently living on the west coast in Raglan, New Zealand. I have lived here for almost four years and I’ve found it full of interesting people and inspiring landscapes that have both had an important an obvious effect on my paintings and the ideas behind them.
I have always preferred to paint in oils and throughout the progression and change of style in my art, it has remained my favourite medium and the only constant. My current series is different than my previous paintings in that it has incorporated other elements including scraps of material, pieces of vintage laces, recycled retro fabrics and wallpapers and various that have been stitched by hand onto the canvases. I have also moved on to new subject matters and many of these new paintings are abstract expressions of things including dancers and all subtly resonating an air of femininity and grace. Each painting to me has a distinct mood and specific symbolism that describes a different mood or distinct feeling of my own and I think I have been able to recreate them reasonably well as a physical vision. These paintings embody a certain dream-like quality that is shown in the vivid colours and seemingly random collection of components that complete each piece. Even as they appear as seemingly simple pleasant pieces, each has a discreet hint of something under the surface, that until you look closer, you won’t see.
Artistic expression is an intrinsic part of my life; creativity I believe enhances the quality and enjoyment of all aspects of life. I hope you enjoy exploring these expressions of my creativity.
