A Million Acres
Jen Romnes
Acrylic on Wood Panel
Image Size: 28.5 inches wide by 71 inches tall
Completed: May 2008
Subject:
As the pine beetle moves east across Canada, it is literally destroying millions of acres of mature forests. The Lodge Pole Pine is facing a 90-95% mortality rate. The beetles are surviving our mild winters due to climate change. As the beetles infest Alberta, there are other tree species it is beginning to devour. There are specimen cross of Jack Pine and Lodge Pole Pines.
In this painting, you are on a cliff looking over acres of silvery dead pines and drying out red pines. In the foreground is the Jack Pine cross, which has succumbed to the pine beetle.
