Eugene Patrick Devany was born in Brooklyn, NY. He studied Art History at Manhattan Collage and Art Design at Hofstra University, but his interest in stained glass began after graduation. He pioneered the technique of cutting curved glass (often recycled from bottles, jars and jugs) and combining the rounded pieces with traditional flat antique - (looks tinted), textured - (machine rolled) and opalescent - (translucent, often reflecting bright colors) glass in various combinations. After a design is finalized and the individual pieces are cut, the glass is joined with the tedious copper foil and solder method (as is often used in church windows and lamp shade design). The use of molded and rounded glass along with flat glass enables the design and construction of three dimensional items that complement a variety of Post-Art Nouveau/Deco and Techno styles.
The distinct sculptured look has been called Oval Stained Glass to distinguish it from the Tiffany styles of a century ago (which continue to rely heavily upon opalescent glass that dominates much of contemporary stained glass art). Devany’s work has won several first prize awards in New York City where the judging is based upon a combination of craftsmanship and art design.
Craftspersons trained only in basic stained glass technique are simply unable to produce items without following two dimensional patterns and lack the ability even to cut glass that is not flat. Because of these significant technical obstacles, Devany remains the only stained glass artist worldwide to work exclusively in the Oval Stained Glass style. Each item placed for sale is considered to be a one-of-a-kind work of art (akin to sculpture) and is signed and dated by the artist with a diamond stylus.
Devany retains copyright in the photographs and original design elements of the work. |
