Countess Dierdriana, Self-Portrait
Maureen W. Clifton
Drawn in 1995, I, Maureen W. Clifton, as my Medieval Persona, Countess Dierdriana of the Misty Isles, had never attempted to draw a 'self-portrait' until that time. Be sure to see the other views herein! The style of gown is 1 12th Century Norman (French influence). It is one of my favorite styles & time periods to make & to wear! While I took some art classes in college, I never took a formal class in how to draw people. It has been one of my most difficult things to draw. I can see it in my mind’s eye, though I just cannot translate that to paper how I wish I could. I draw costumes, patterns, ‘filler’ art, cartoons & a variety of other art. Years ago, as I was working on an update of my booklet, ‘Guidelines on Being an Attendant to Royalty’ – I had this feeling about all my years of service, the experiences I had & what I felt I had accomplished well within the medieval organization (SCA). I wanted a drawing of a lady, motioning to a banner above her, which read, “In Service...” I drew a black ink drawing of a lady wearing a similar style to my 12th Century Norman costumes & added an embattled coronet. She is standing there with flowers in one hand with the other hand, a soft gesture motioning above with her chin tilted up, so it appears she is looking at the banner. When I showed it to a friend, she immediately said, “She is you! You drew yourself. This is a self-portrait!” And, so it is! Now & then, I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or in a photo with that same solemn expression of lofty thoughts, wondering at times, how I have done all the things I have managed to accomplish over the decades. And, I smile, as it pleases me that I have! I have had my accolades and translated some sketches into needlework & that is half the fun! The other half is creating the items I have! Please see additional views of the booklet’s cover, my original black & white drawing & another of differenc tolors of costume, the colors of my Arms (Heraldic Device).
