12th Night Trumpet & Banner Ticket Hand Drawn TICKETS - Set of 10

12th Night Trumpet & Banner Ticket
Maureen W. Clifton

In 1980, in preparing what we needed for 12th Night, in this case, specifically the tickets, we were still creating such things as announcements & tickets by hand – not on computers (most of us did not have them, yet). To make things interesting, I designed the TICKETS for 12th Night in the Kingdom of the West (SCA) in the same announcement fashion using a Medieval Horn with a Banner tied onto it. Because copy machines were poor in those days, not to mention expensive, copying & pasting up a set on a single sheet was not going to get the job done. I sat at my table with a calligraphy pen & hand drew 10 of the same thing on a sheet of paper to take to the printer. In some ways, I felt like the Monks of Medieval Times, drawing illuminations. Hardly though, creating illumination, as an artform, has never been my ‘stick.’ I had taken a class on illumination & hands on creation of a design & that was when I knew it was not for me. In doing the task of creating tickets for 12th Night, I amazed myself how close each one was to the next! It is a matter of concentration. I created a set of tickets on more than one occasion (another follows). Be sure to click to the additional view herein, as it is the entire page of all 10 that I had a good printer copy for us onto card stock & cut. Look closely to see my blue lines & cut marks that did not show when copied. It worked well & as each ticket was purchased & assigned, the Exchequer (treasurer) for 12th Night logged them & added a number to the ticket. Notice that the hall used that January 3, 1981 was the Marin Civic Center, San Rafael, California. That building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright & it was built in 1957! It is an awesome building & is just as modern in 2009 as it ever was & that I find incredible! Frank Lloyd Wright ahead of his time in his architectural designs. I have had the pleasure of being in other of his structures, one a house that was moved to Oregon. Check out this site: www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Marin_Civic_Center.htmlOpens in new window. It gets better! Here we are in this awesome ‘modern building’ having a medieval function for 12th Night, January 3, 1981 & I received my Pelican, an Award of Peerage for Service to the Kingdom – in that building! I was totally surprised & have no photos of those moments, though it is in my memory (as much as it can be, as I only remember smatterings of it, partly because I was so shocked & it was long ago). My service to the SCA has always just been – ask the question, “What needs to be done?” And then, do it! In Autocratting 12th Night, I felt I was able to create an event that all would remember & yet, it came to pass that it was a wonderful memory for me that time, which will be with me forever! This is one little aspect of what went into creating a great time for all & managing a huge event. As Autocrat, I certainly never expected to be honored & before King Radnor & Queen Esmirelda like that & I thank them & the Peers who felt I was worthy. It tickles me that I received my Pelican – a Peerage in the SCA – at the Marin complex where Frank Lloyd Wright created his magical architecture. I felt like we were in a castle somewhere. That building was completed 2 years before Mr. Wright’s death (1867 to 1959). And, that famous artisan & architect’s work was a building where I was so honored. And, to be totally mundane, ‘How cool is that?’ In 2001, I got to walk inside complex again, when Earl Kevin & I went to get the permits for the Old Timer’s Event! Fun stuff & many happy memories!
