Queen Dierdriana - 12th C Norman
Maureen W. Clifton

After years of Archery & then not doing any for a time, it was good to pick up a Bow & Arrows & know I could still Hit Gold! Photo is from 1984, in Alaska as Queen Dierdriana of the West Kingdom, Princess of Oertha (Alaska), Princess of Lochac (Australia) & Queen to King Ronald, a long time friend & ‘chosen’ son. We had a great political alliance! In the main photo, I am not wearing a vambrace while shooting. Unless you have done Archery for a long time, I suggest wearing one! I have been fortunate to have never hit my arm, though there is a reason for a vambrace (arm protection). Why I do not get hit is all in how the arm is held! In Alaska, I was loaned equipment & had on finger guards. I gave an Archery lesson there in July 1984. I designed this outfit & it evolved. In this view, I am wearing a long lavender veil, the same material as the under gown. A dear friend, Lady Gabrielle, trimmed the entire edge of my veil in pearls, which is lovely. It was quite something to be out in the woods with that costume on, as Queen & shooting Archery! The outfit is 3 layers with light weight lavender under gown, trimmed in a narrow rose design & has small buttons up the front & on the sleeves. It serves as a foundation garment. The middle gown can be worn over the under gown, wearing only those 2 & creates a cooler outfit & worn with or without the girdle. The middle gown is losely woven cotton lavender fabric. The fabric was perfect for creating openwork on the bodice & sleeves that come to the elbow (see details). I had difficulty with the open work, due to my eyesight. It is simple, yet elegant with some gold metallic thread. The gown closes up the front with flat larger hooks & has a double row of golden trim down its center & single row around its neckline & on the edge of its sleeves. There is evidence that a crude type of hook & eye were used in medieval times. The entire edges of the bodice sleeve trim on both sides were stitched with metallic thread. The golden trim is seen on the bodice & outer tunic sleeves. See additional photo of Mistress Dierdriana with m’lord Daniel Hydefox (R.I.P.) at 12th Night in the West AS XVIII (January 1984, California), as Queen in Court (West), in 1990 at Games Tournament (Colorado)& a closer view of the bodice & sleeves of this gown’s layers. These 2 under gowns worked well under another outfit years later, though before I finished the outer deeper lavenders & purples gown, I wore the first two layers with its girdle 12th Night with a purple veil, held in place with my circlet.
