Dierdriana - A Scottish Lass
Maureen W. Clifton
Countess Dierdriana in several years as a Scottish Lass & some are: December 1990, ready for a Fund Raiser Holiday Feast in Delta, Colorado for Valley Symphony at which she was a Hostess for a table of guests. I am wearing Fraser of Lovat Tartan hostess skirt & sash as a shawl with a black velvet vest with silver trim & a leine I made. My sash is pined with brooches on each shoulder. I am weasring a leather coronet with red heraldic roses & a golden background. It was made for me by my friend, Viscountess Seelie (West). In another view, I am standing in front of the High Table for Valley Symphony in 1993. It is decorated with a dark green tablecloth with Fraser Tartan trim & runners I made. Additional views are, a 1978 photo of Dierdriana of the Misty Isles, dressed as a Medieval Scottish Lass, making a presentation at an SCA Court (medieval group & King & Queen are to the left & out of view). I am wearing a white leine & grey vest with black trim & silver buttons with Fraser of Lovat Dress Tartan skirt & a Renaissance style hat. The seated gentleman is a friend & was Prince of An Tir at that time. Now, he is Duke Sir Steingrim Stallari. Steingrim fought in tournaments in Dierdriana’s honor in the past. Old photos are grainy and often looked fuzzy. Another view is Dierdriana & friend, Susan at a 1987 Scottish Banquet, Barony of Vinhold (Napa Valley, California). Susan is wearing MacRae Dress Red Tartan shirt & sash with a white blouse & the same grey & black vest I mentioned. Dierdriana is wearing Fraser Dress Red Tartan shirt with a white leine with black trim with her sash, used as a shawl & pinned with brooches on each shoulder to her black velvet & silver trimmed vest. Scottish history reveals the first tartans were from the 3rd Century A.D., though were quite crude. About mid-1500s, more Clan Tartans, called ‘Breacans’ begin to be woven & defined for each Clan's Tartan Sett & it evolved further to what is seen today, not only in Scotland, around the world. Aye!
